Take a Kid Fishing
Fishing is the gateway to a lifetime outdoors — and the license you buy helps pay for the lakes and rivers you love.

Ask a lifelong hunter how it started, and you will often hear about a pond, a cane pole and a patient adult. Fishing is the simplest way to bring young people outdoors: it needs little gear, rewards patience, and teaches respect for wildlife and water. Late spring and early summer, when fish are active near the shore, is the perfect time to start.
Keep the first trips short and successful. Choose a spot where small fish bite readily, bring snacks and sunscreen, and let the child do as much as possible — baiting, casting and reeling. Life jackets around deep water and boats are non-negotiable, and a short talk about hooks and casting space prevents most mishaps.
Licensing rules vary by state. Many states require adults to hold a fishing license and set different rules for young anglers; many also hold free fishing days each year. Check your state wildlife agency's regulations for seasons, size limits and bag limits before you go.
Fishing licenses do more than make you legal. Under the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act of 1950, excise taxes on fishing equipment are returned to the states for fisheries management, boating access and aquatic education — a user-pays conservation model that sits alongside the Pittman–Robertson Act's support for wildlife. Every angler is a conservationist.
Teach the ethics early: keep only what you will use, handle fish you release gently and quickly, pack out every piece of line and trash, and leave the bank cleaner than you found it.
