The holiday season brings families together, but it can also be isolating for veterans who live alone or far from family. A phone call, a visit or an invitation to a meal can mean a great deal.

Many local veterans' posts and community groups run holiday drives, wreath-laying ceremonies and gatherings. Volunteering for one of them is a simple way to show thanks.

Shooting clubs and sportsmen's associations can contribute too, by hosting a charity event, sponsoring a veteran's membership, or organizing a mentored hunt or range day. A well-planned fundraiser can support a local veterans' cause year-round.

If your group wants to formalize its giving, learning the basics of starting and running a nonprofit can help you do it properly and transparently.
